After eating lunch at Battery Park we to the High Line. The former elevated train track has been turned into an elevated hiking trail with natural plants and flowers for everyone to enjoy, as well as a lot of local shopping! The High Line has slowly been extended each year and truly is an amazing accomplishment. One that should be replicated elsewhere.
Friday's visit was packed on a busy day in New York City. Our first stop was at the 9/11 Memorial in Lower Manhattan. Campers were able to take some to look at the massive reflective pools that are in the footprints of the former twin towers. We discussed some of the details of that day and why so much time and money was spent on making the memorial and the new Freedom Tower.

The spire on top of One World Trade Center is complete! 1,776 feet tall! Amazing few this morning! I can't wait for our students to see it in person this June! Any ideas as to why it is exactly 1,776 feet!?
I have scheduled our first trip this summer! As promised, NYC was first on the agenda. We will start the day in the Bronx with a tour of Yankees Stadium and its museum. The curator of the museum is Brian Richards. His uncle is our tour guide of Gettysburg each year in fifth grade and suggested we add this to our NYC tour! After that we will take a short trip to Central Park for lunch. From there we will head down to The High Line. This will be our third stop on The High Line for B.E.E.S. I found out about this great destination in our "Time for Kids" magazine. Each year they have added on to the trail. We can't see how far they have come since our last visit in 2011! We will end the day with a stop at the Ground Zero Memorial. The students and staff were very moved by our visit there two years ago. This is now one of the biggest moments of American history and something that occurred before most of our students were even born. Click on all the links to learn more!
